What makes you a woman?

I was reading this article from womensenews.org last night, and it really steamed my broccoli. The author is arguing against the use of birth control to completely skip having periods. I agree with her that any new drug, or new use of an old drug, needs lots of study to make sure its safe. However I vehemently disagree with her reasons why women should not use these methods to skip their periods. I disagree that the menstrual cycle is "the foundation of women's being". Bleeding once a month is not what makes me a woman or a complete person. It doesn't remind me of my womanhood, I didn't need the reminder in the first place.

I also disagree with the assertion that "Women have been so overwhelmed with negative messages about the inconvenience of menstruation we are willing to take a synthetic chemical cocktail to eliminate the monthly cycle, the foundation of our womanhood." It wasn't TV commercials and magazine articles that told me having a period is inconvenient, it just IS inconvenient.

So if you had the option for a safe, effective way to suppress menstruation, would you do it? And if not, why?

I would be all for a safe means for eliminating the inconvenience. My issue is that I don’t feel that it is safe. Our bodies were made to go through certain process for a reason. I wonder what effects it would have on our bodies to not go through that cleansing.

I don't remember if that post points this out, but when you're on the pill you aren't really having your period anyways, since you aren't ovulating. I believe the bleeding is caused by withdrawal from the hormones if I remember right.
